Ankle Pain

Ankle pain can result from various causes, including injuries, overuse, or underlying medical conditions that affect the bones, ligaments, tendons, or cartilage in the ankle joint. The ankle is a critical joint for mobility, supporting the body’s weight during activities like walking, running, and jumping. Pain in the ankle can range from mild discomfort to severe, limiting the ability to move or bear weight on the joint.

Common Symptoms

  • Ankle sprains, caused by overstretching or tearing the ligaments that support the ankle, often from twisting or rolling the ankle
  • Fractures, where one or more bones in the ankle break due to trauma or accidents
  • Tendonitis, inflammation of the tendons, such as Achilles tendonitis, which affects the tendon at the back of the ankle
  • Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, causing pain and stiffness in the ankle joint
  • Gout, a form of arthritis that results from uric acid crystals forming in the joint, causing sudden, severe pain and swelling
  • Bursitis, inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that cushion the ankle joint
  • Nerve compression, such as tarsal tunnel syndrome, where nerves near the ankle are compressed
  • Flat feet, which can strain the ankle and lead to pain and instability over time
  • Tendinopathy, where the tendons around the ankle are weakened or degenerated due to overuse or injury
