Arthritis

Arthritis in the neck, also known as cervical osteoarthritis or cervical spondylosis, is a condition where the cartilage, discs, and bones in the cervical spine (the neck region) degenerate over time. This wear and tear often occurs due to aging but can also result from previous injuries, repetitive stress, or certain genetic factors. As the cushioning between vertebrae breaks down, it can lead to stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility in the neck, along with other symptoms like nerve compression.

Cervical arthritis can cause chronic discomfort and, in more advanced cases, may lead to complications like spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal), which can compress the spinal cord or nerve roots, leading to more severe symptoms.

Common Symptoms

  • Chronic neck pain that may worsen with movement
  • Stiffness in the neck, especially after waking up or prolonged inactivity
  • Reduced range of motion in the neck
  • Pain that radiates to the shoulders, arms, or upper back
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or hands (due to nerve compression)
  • Grinding or popping sensations (crepitus) when moving the neck
  • Headaches, often originating from the neck
  • Muscle spasms or tightness in the neck and shoulder region
  • Difficulty turning the head or looking over the shoulder
  • Increased pain with certain activities, such as looking up or down for extended periods
