Foot & Ankle Pain

Foot and ankle pain can result from a variety of causes, including injuries, overuse, structural issues, or medical conditions affecting the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves in the foot and ankle. These areas bear the weight of the body and are involved in many daily activities like walking, running, and standing, making them prone to strain and injury. Common causes of foot and ankle pain include sprains, fractures, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, arthritis, and nerve compression (e.g., tarsal tunnel syndrome).

Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to severe pain, depending on the underlying cause, and may affect mobility and quality of life. Proper diagnosis and treatment are essential to manage foot and ankle pain effectively.

Common Symptoms

  • Sharp or aching pain in the foot, ankle, or heel
  • Swelling and tenderness in the foot or ankle
  • Bruising or discoloration around the affected area (often seen with injuries)
  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion in the foot or ankle
  • Difficulty bearing weight or walking
  • Numbness or tingling in the foot (nerve-related issues)
  • Pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest
  • A popping or snapping sensation (in cases of sprains or tendon injuries)
  • Foot deformities, such as bunions or flat feet, contributing to pain
  • Weakness or instability in the ankle, leading to frequent ankle sprains
  • Heel pain, especially when taking the first steps in the morning (common in plantar fasciitis)
